A valley woman became a grandmother twice in less than an hour. Two of her daughter gave birth on the same day, almost at the same time, both at Banner Desert Hospital in Mesa.
"It was just like an exciting like wow I'm a grandmother and it's a boy and a girl, a pair," says Elizabeth Avila, new grandmother.
Elizabeth Avila's granddaughter Estella was born at 11:49 am on May 16 to her daughter Vanessa.
Less than an hour later, Aidan Frankie was born to younger daughter Alexis.
"It just felt weird because I woke up and they're like you had your baby, and I'm like oh my god really, I was like, I want to see him," says Alexis.
20-year-old Alexis Avila wasn't due until June 16, but a medical condition forced a C-section.
Even though he was a month early, Aidan weighed in at 6 pounds and one ounce. Estella arrived a few weeks late, according to grandma. The little girl weighed two pounds more than her first cousin.
The cousins will always share a special story.
"They had the baby showers together, beautiful colors, it was so nice… they had the babies now, the first birthday they are going to be bonded. It's going to be a bond for the two little cousins to grow up together," says grandmother Elizabeth.
Grandma told us that her oldest grandbaby Estella and her mom were discharged on Saturday. Little Aidan's mom was discharged Monday. He will remain in NICU for a few more weeks in Mesa.
