The American Red Cross is working in a variety of ways and from several different areas of the country to help the victims of the tornadoes which struck in the nation's heartland.

One day after a massive twister hit in Moore, Oklahoma members of the Southeastern Michigan Red Cross have been told to be on standby. Usually they have 24 hour notice for deployment but when disasters this big strike, things can change very quickly.

Emergency Services Specialist April Beaton said, "when something like this happens, this community is always ready to respond. We'll make sure the vehicles have everything they need including relief supplies, individuals to drive them. We'll drive them on down there and they'll do whatever is needed."

Beaton is just one of hundreds of Metro Detroiters who are waiting for the phone to ring, ready to head to Oklahoma to help the victims of the tornado.

American Red Cross chapters close to Moore, Ok. have been on the ground since Monday evening. Over the next few days workers on the scene will be assessing the situation and may call for additional help. That's where local chapters get involved.

Beaton has helped in the wake of several recent disasters including Hurricane Sandy. She says she can't imagine what the folks in Moore are going through. "I don't think any training can prepare you for what you're going to see on the ground. Every instance is different, especially something like this," Beaton said.

If you would like to help the people of Oklahoma you can text the American Red Cross to 90999, it's a $10 donation that will be tacked onto your cell phone bill.
