Trump believes Detroit is 'on the right path'

NOVI, Mich. (WJBK) -

Tuesday night, a longtime Oakland County tradition attracted a big crowd in Novi, and a familiar name flew in for the occasion.

Donald Trump said he agreed to speak at Oakland County's Lincoln Day Dinner because he believes big things are happening in Michigan.

"I've had great respect for this state. I have many, many friends in this state," Trump said.

More than 2,000 of them showed up to hear him. It's the highest turnout the event has ever had. The mogul told reporters his address would take on tough issues, issues he said his fellow Republicans cannot ignore.

"I'm going to be talking about Obamacare. I'm going to be talking about immigration as it relates to the Republican Party and to the country," Trump said.

His prediction for the 2016 race for the White House?

"I think that the Republicans are going to have to get very, very smart and very, very quickly, and if they do, '16 will be good and more immediately '14 has a chance to be very good," Trump said.

"I can only say this. If they don't choose the right person, it will be a landslide because beating Hillary [Clinton] is not going to be an easy situation, and it will most likely be her."

Trump might be concerned about the White House, but he has nothing but praise for Michigan and the development happening in downtown Detroit.

"I was looking at Detroit 15 or 16 years ago. I was looking at the tire plant and some other things in Detroit and I didn't see it then, and frankly, now I'm seeing it," he said.

So could we see a Trump tower along the riverfront anytime soon?

"Detroit is a place I would go. I really think Detroit, I think you're on the right path in Detroit. Lots of good things are happening," he said.

That's the most Trump would say about whether he would bring a project to Detroit, and we shouldn't expect anything more anytime soon because right now he's focusing on projects in other cities like Miami.
