'Operation Swill' Takes Aim At Alcoholic Beverage Brand Swaps

TRENTON, N.J. -

New Jersey says it's cracking down on bars and restaurants amid claims that they're substituting premium alcoholic beverage brands with "well brand spirits," unbeknownst to customers.

With combined efforts from the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control and the Division of Criminal Justice, "Operation Swill" started Wednesday.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office said in a news release that certain alcoholic beverage inventories were seized and 29 licensed restaurants and bars were served for their records.

The investigation will last for about a year, and it came about after the suggestion that some of these 29 establishments were filling premium-brand alcohol bottles with non-premium brands instead to fool customers and increase profits, according to a news release.

Customers were under the impression that they were drinking and paying for the premium brand, the state alleges.

Citizen complaints and confidential informants drove more than 100 investigators to execute this operation, the attorney general's office says.

A news conference is planned for Thursday morning to release more details on "Operation Swill."
