High-tech cooking gadgets

Posted: Updated:

Cooking used to be as simple as putting heat to meat…but not anymore.  There are all sorts of high tech gadgets designed to help make our lives simpler and tastier.

Fox 5 took a look at some of the hottest gadgets on the market or coming soon to a kitchen near you.

From making homemade baby food in minutes with the Kalorik Gourmet baby food maker that both steams veggies and purees them, to learning from your online refrigerator when food is about to expire, with so many high tech cooking gadgets on the market today you don't have to be a professional chef to channel your inner Julia Child right in your own kitchen..

Cooking a delicious meal today is easier than you think, regardless of your busy schedule or budget.

"You can just take a few minutes and you're done," says Tanya Steel, editor in chief of www.epicurious.com, "all you need to do is get a few gadgets, some great ingredients, some good recipes and you're set."

Take the Breville Smart Scoop Ice Cream Compressor sold at www.williams-sonoma.com. The Breville makes soft-serve to hard ice cream in less than an hour. Unlike other ice cream makers, you don't have to plan ahead; no more prepared frozen bowls the night before!

Consider the affordable Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro-Juicer . Instead of spending all day slicing up fruit to be juiced, its widened mouth allows most fruits to be juiced whole without any preparation.

If  veggies are your thing you will love the new KitchenAid 16 cup Pro Line® Series Food Processor. This is the first food processor that allows for hands-free, commercial-style dicing and cubing.

Nothing is worse when it comes to bread – than burning your toast.  The KitchenAid Pro Line Toaster takes that worry away by allowing you to select precise browning settings. The toaster will also keep your toast warm for an extra three minutes without burning it!

If you're craving a breakfast sandwich, no need to wake up early to go to McDonalds, stay at home and make your own in minutes with Hamilton Beach's Breakfast Sandwich Maker. It promises a hot and hearty breakfast sandwich using your own fresh ingredients in less than five minutes!

"It's an inexpensive machine and cheap breakfast. All you have to do is add an English muffin, bagels, cover with some cheese, some spinach, pour some egg in, turn it on, five minutes, you have the ultimate McMuffin," says Steel.

If you are trying to cut down on calories and you want to skip the bread try the Kalorik Rollie Eggmaster a vertical cooker that makes great eggs in minutes without all the mess of cleaning your pan and oven.

The most high tech appliance straight out of the Jetson's kitchen we found is the new Samsung MC368GAAW5A oven, so far only available in Korea.

This futuristic wifi connected oven can cook 160 different preset dishes programmed from your smartphone, if that is not amazing enough the Samsung Smart Oven can also let you know the weight and calorie content of your food.

In America, however, Samsung is offering an amazing Wi-Fi connected refrigerator that has an LCD screen that helps keep track of all your food, give us access to apps, weather, web browsing for recipes, or leave notes for your family—all from the refrigerator door.

"Steel says, "you can just point and click and make whatever recipe is you want to make."

While these are the cutting edge at-home appliances, to find truly mind boggling cuisine technology, go to Chef Wiley Dufresne's W-D 50 restaurant on the lower east side.

"We are doing delicious food in interesting ways," claims Dufresne who takes pride in finding different uses for existing technology, such as using a blood spinning centrifuge usually found in a medical lab. Instead of spinning blood, the centrifuge is used to make everything from sauces to celery oil!

Dufresne uses a vacuum to make his delicious air-rated root beer float. "We've taken this ice cream and because we put the vacuum on it, it's nice and airy and you're able to have a big piece," says Dufresne.

Both Dufresne and Steel agree that no matter your cooking skills or tools, the important thing is try and experiment for yourself!

Many new Ford and GM cars have built-in technology that allows you to monitor speed, signaling, and navigation when your child is driving. But when it comes to this type of digital snooping, teens and their parents often have differing opinions. Kids may call it an invasion of privacy. Most parents, of course, will likely feel otherwise.

A new app is bringing the star treatment to the masses. Glamsquad delivers a hair and makeup artist to your doorstep.I invited them over to my place. Kelly did my makeup and Erin styled my mane. They helped me select a look from examples on the app and they encouraged me to tweak the looks to fit my style.

Your Facebook page or email could soon be passed on in a will just like physical property. Delaware is the first state to allow heirs access to their loved ones' digital legacies. Pedram Tabibi, a social media attorney, says in many cases this can be vital information, like banking and health data. He says current terms and conditions for websites such as Apple, Amazon, and Google won't let an account get passed onto someone else.
