Crews prepare to pave alternate route to US 89

Updated:

PAGE, Ariz. (AP) - The state Department of Transportation is preparing to pave a road that will serve as an alternate route to a buckled highway.

A 150-foot section of pavement on U.S. 89 south of Page buckled earlier this year in a landslide.

A stretch of Navajo Route 20 between the Gap and Page will be used as an alternate route but first must be paved.

Transportation spokesman Dustin Krugel says crews are headed to the site this week. The paving project is expected to begin within the next month and be complete later this summer.

The department is asking motorists to stay off the roadway while it's being upgraded. Traffic delays could take up to an hour otherwise.

No timetable has been set for reopening U.S. 89.
