Travelers take to the road, airports this holiday weekend

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Things are going to be very busy at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport this weekend. Many travelers will also hit the roads for Memorial Day, and they'll pay the price at the pump.

It seems the number of holiday travelers goes up each year, and this year's Memorial Day weekend is no exception.

AAA expects 31.2 million drivers on the roads. That's up 0.25% from last year.

Experts say the reason is higher air fares, and stable - although high - gasoline prices. The average price of a gallon of unleaded is $4.40 in Chicago, which is miles above the national average of $3.66 per gallon and 12 cents higher than Chicago's gas prices during Memorial Day weekend last year.

State police say they will have zero tolerance this year when enforcing what they call the "fatal four."

"We will be specifically looking for individuals that not wearing their seat belts, traveling over the speed limit, driving while impaired and distracted drivers," Police Captain Luis Gutierrez says.

Last year, state police issued 4,800 tickets for violations during the four-day holiday weekend. Their message of stressing safety is resonating with some people who don't want to be among those getting pulled over this year.

"I want to go to Arlington Park, and I don't want to drive, that's for sure, cause I'd like to have a good time so I'll probably take the train, quite frankly," says Chicago resident Dan Parker.

As far as air travel, the city's Department of Aviation says that the 269,000 passengers expected at O'Hare on Friday will make it the busiest day of the holiday weekend.

All told, the department is anticipating a 2% increase in the number of O'Hare passengers for the five day travel period and a 3% increase at Midway International Airport.
