EPA website with links to closed beaches in the United States
The forecast for the Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start to summer isn't exactly perfect for swimming, but warmer days are on the way. With that in mind there are several ways you can check on the health of area beaches before you take the plunge.
The Oakland County Health Division has a beach monitoring program that kicks off June 3rd. This year the county plans to monitor 65 public beaches on 50 different lakes. The water at each of the beaches will then be tested on a weekly basis for E. Coli. High levels of the bacteria can be harmful to swimmers.
If a beach does not meet the water quality standard set up by the state, it will be closed until the samples come back at safe levels. According to the Department of Environmental Quality only Weko Beach on Lake Michigan is closed right now.
For a list of the lakes being tested in your community you can check out the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Beachguard Site.
