Hamtramck High School teacher charged with eavesdropping

FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Ferndale police catch an accused peeping Tom. They say it wasn't random. He was secretly watching and recording his boss.

"It is not something that you see every day. I mean, this is an individual that was for the lack of a better term creepy," said Ferndale Police Chief Tim Collins.

Ferndale police said 42-year-old Gerald Gresham, a teacher at Hamtramck High School, was videotaping through a window the school's 32-year-old principal talking with another woman. He was spotted by a person out for a walk at eleven o'clock at night.

Both Gresham and the principal live in Ferndale.

Gresham is now charged with eavesdropping, a two year felony.

"It was a passer-by that noticed some unusual activity in a back yard. They saw a man standing in the bushes outside of a home and were good enough to call us, which we really do appreciate," Collins said.

Police responded and arrested the teacher. He was locked up in Ferndale and arraigned on the charge. The magistrate ordered a $2,000 cash surety bond. It's unclear whether Gresham has posted bond.

Police said they learned that Gresham had previously asked the principal out several times, but she always declined.

"I said the creep factor on this one is very high. You just don't know where this person was going with that. I mean, it could've been he was just a weirdo or you never know, and in this day and age, our hats off to the individual that called us because it could've stopped a very potentially dangerous situation from occurring," Collins said.

The school district's superintendent indicated there would be no comment Thursday night, but that a statement would be made on Friday regarding Gresham's status.
