Family Pet Saves Business Owner From Burglar

Kasey's bark may be worse than her bite.

But Hamilton Township Police say the crook who tried to rob Draper Ellis late Thursday afternoon at his "May's Landing Auto Parts Store" didn't stick around to find out.

"He started getting louder," said Ellis repeating what the crook said. "I  got a knife! Give me your (expletive) money. I got a knife."

Little did the crook now Ellis wasn't alone. His crime fighting companion was laying in wait behind the counter.

When Ellis yelled "Kasey come!" The 7-year-old Belgian Shepherd sprang into action, responding to his  command.

"I opened the door and said, 'Kasey go!' At that point she directed right after him down the road."

The crook didn't get a dime as Kasey chased him down Camac, away from the store, then returned to Ellis' side.

"Good girl," he said petting her.

Kasey doesn't have any guard dog training. Ellis says she's a family pet raised by his son, Nydair.

"Yes, I'm surprised because she's a calm dog, usually doesn't go after people," said Nydair.

After coming face to face with a robber for the first time in 20 years in business, Ellis shared what he called the unsettling experience with customers.

"Don't bring a knife to a dog fight," he said to one customer as he vowed to never come to work without his protective little girl.

"I always wondered in the back of my mind if she would protect or go after someone. I definitely learned that lesson. She did a very good job. "

Kasey's reward for protecting her owner? A quarter-pounder with cheese.

As for the suspect, police say he's still on the run. He's described as a black male, 18- to 22-years-old, 6 feet tall, short hair and wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt over a white V-neck T-shirt, with blue jeans and clean white shoes. If you have any information call Hamilton Township police.
