Trooper gets $325,000 to settle whistleblower suit

Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The state Attorney General's Office will reportedly pay $325,000 to a former state police trooper to settle claims he was mistreated after warning that the division was failing to properly keep track of its thousands of weapons.

The Star-Ledger of Newark recently obtained a copy of the settlement with Lt. Robert Betten, which was reached in February.

The newspaper says this marks the second straight year the state has made a significant payout to a trooper who claimed retaliation after raising concerns about weapons management. Between the two cases, it says the Attorney General's Office has paid out $675,000.

Betten filed a whistle-blower lawsuit in 2008, claiming he was harassed, threatened, denied assignments and passed over for promotion while assigned to the firearms training unit in 2006.

For decades, making some quick cash was the main drive behind so many who took the ride down the parkway to Atlantic City. But with so much to choose from nowadays, it looks like Atlantic City is in a lot of trouble.
