Pulte's move: Leaders at Mackinac Policy Conference react

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WJBK) -

Reaction to Pulte's decision to move its headquarters out of Michigan from some of the leaders on Mackinac Island ranged from shock to disappointment. But is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

It would be too easy to say that the Pulte move to Atlanta blindsided leaders at the Mackinac Policy Conference.

"It's unfortunate to have a headquarters moving out of state. They need to make their decisions, and I respect that," said Gov. Rick Snyder.

"We were... a little surprised by that," said Doug Smith, vice president of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. "We recognize that Pulte... with their two purchases [has] become really a global figure in housing, and so sometimes you take a look at the marketplace and go where the market may be. So we'll be very sad to lose them," said Doug Smith, vice president of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Is there anything anyone can do to keep Pulte in Michigan?

"I don't want to second guess them until I talk to them, but I'm going to have a little conversation with them," said state Sen. Mike Kowal, chair of the Economic Policy Committee. "I'm going to say what do you need from us to keep you here?"

Democrats were quick to blame Snyder for Pulte's move saying the governor has given too much money to corporations.

"The massive tax giveaways that the governor has given to businesses are not solving our problems," said state Democratic House chair Rep. Tim Greimel. "Unfortunately, Pulte's move indicates... that strategy isn't working."

"The whole situation of tax credits, I'm not a big believer in them. I don't think that's the best way to do business. That's one of the challenges we've had in Michigan. I think we need some strategic resources like the programs we've put in place through the MEDC," Snyder said. "Programs like Pure Michigan Business Connect, what a hit."

We've been told that Pulte Corporation will at least maintain a presence in Michigan, even though their headquarters is moving out, and the Pulte family is committed to doing good things for the City of Detroit, especially tearing down abandoned buildings.
