ATLANTA -

As of Tuesday, the increasingly popular 44th Annual Peachtree Road is exactly one month away! If you've signed up, but haven't started training, don't worry – you're not alone.

And starting today, FOX 5 and All News 106.7 are helping get you on track. Not only will our own Carolyn Ryan will be training throughout the next month, but she'll be taking us along for ride as we Countdown to Peachtree.

Carolyn teamed up with one of Atlanta's top trainers to help get her in shape in time for the race. That means everything from endurance run to sprints, yoga to strength training and agility drills to fancy machines. Mary Elizabeth Hogenmuller, owner of Forza Di Vita in Buckhead, uses a multi-platform approach to get her clients in shape.

"We'll go to the track and we'll run, we can bike, strength train, yoga training, pilates," Mary Elizabeth said.

She's pulling out all of the stops in taking Carolyn on a 5-week journey to get her ready to run!

Week 1 is all about preparation.

Mary Elizabeth said, "You need to have the right gear. Make sure you have the right shoes, the right clothing. Make sure that you have a plan.

"Then, once you have all those elements together, it's very simple. You lace up your tennis shoes, you walk out the door, and you hit the pavement."

For the right gear, the ladies headed to Phidippides Running Store in Sandy Springs.  Kevin Graham is the manager and runs a Peachtree training group himself. He says without proper running shoes, you run the risk of injury.

"Your size of your shoe in a dress shoe is wildly different in running shoes," Graham said.

That's why he says it's smart to get fitted by an expert.  He or she will measure your foot.

Be sure to evaluate the mechanics of the shoe. Then, run in the shoe to observe the natural landing patterns of your feet.

Next step is to find a good running outfit.

Graham said, "More breathable, so there's some sort of brand of the fabric that will pull the moisture off your skin."

Finally, map out a training program for yourself.

Mary Elizabeth said, "We're gonna start with a run/walk combination.

"And then we'll work our way up from there to increase your distance as well as your time," she said.

If you're a beginner, start with a mile. Gradually, try to increase that distance a little bit each day, working your way up to two miles by the end of the week.
