Residents Brace For US Open Traffic

Posted: Updated:

One of the biggest sporting events the area has seen in years is just days away. But for the quiet community of Ardmore, Delaware County,  the US Open Golf Championship being held June 10-16 at Merion Golf Club may just be the biggest logistical nightmares in recent history.

"It's going to be hell" said Ardmore resident Alexis Anderson.

Anderson along with her husband Bill were among about 100 residents who showed up at a community meeting with Haverford Township Police to address the traffic and parking challenges the area will face.

The Anderson's are not golf fans but they do live about a minute away from the front gates of Merion Golf Club.

"We are going to get through this. It's annoying. It's not going to benefit us at all but we will get through it" said Bill Anderson.

Fox 29 was at Merion Golf Club as last minute preparations continue. USGA officials were on the course inspecting the putting greens. Hospitality tents have been erected on the front lawns of well manicured Main Line homes. And traffic navigation signs are up on roads surrounding the 124 acre historic golf club.

Haverford Police are expecting 200,000 people to come through the gates next week. Roads will be detoured. Some entire neighborhoods around Merion Golf Club will be closed to the public. And spectators coming to Ardmore will have to park miles away at remote lots at PPL Park in Chester and Rose Tree Park in Media. Shuttle buses will bring fans to the course.

"In the magnitude of my career I have never dealt with anything of this size" said Haverford Township Deputy Police Chief John Viola.

This will be Viola's third US Open at Merion. The last one back in 1981 does not compare to the magnitude of this year. He's been planning for next week for the past 2 years.

"Last year I went out to San Francisco and that was double or triple the size of Merion. That's the biggest challenge we are putting so much in a small area" he said.

Residents have been given residential parking passes to get access to their neighborhoods and 3,500 "No Parking" signs are going up in the area starting Wednesday.

Some are bracing for a week of headaches.

"I think people are going to be excited about what is going to happen but I don't know if they actually know what's coming it's going to be a lot of people" said Ardmore resident Robert Thomas.

Police tell Fox 29 that someone had put their parking pass up for sale on eBay and Craigslist for $500. They contacted the seller who took down the posting. Other residents are trying to cash in by selling parking spots in their driveway for up to $100 a day.

Gates to Merion Golf Club will open at 6AM every day from June 10-16th.
