Summer reading list makes books fun for kids

Posted: Updated:

If you could just get your son or daughter to open a book this summer. But your children just want to play all day.

A new recommended summer reading list could be just the thing to get you both what you want. Take this group of kids, for instance. They thought they were coming to the library for a simple story time. The folks at the Fulton County library had other ideas.

"We make it fun for them. We add music," said Michelle Bennett, youth services director at the Fulton County Library.

"It's all about learning," she said.

If you're going to capture your kids' attention with books, Bennett suggests pairing reading with activities. For the first time, the Association for Library Service to Children has put together a summer reading list to bring together two things that children love – playing and reading.

Bennett said, "We don't want to bore them this summer with books. We try to engage then with storytime activities."

The list – compiled along with help from the LEGO toy company – consists of 10 books. Featured books include "Construction Crew" by Lynn Meltzer paired with activities that allow your child to not only read the story, but build on it, as well.

Bennett said, "Research has shown that children who participate in literacy-based activities through the summer are more prepared for school."

It's making learning not just something kids do, but have fun doing.
