Sweet success of Marietta's Dough in the Box

MARIETTA, Ga. -

In case you hadn't heard, today is National Donut Day. It's a held every year on the first Friday of June. And, as luck would have it, there are plenty of incredible specialty donut shops in North Georgia to help you celebrate!

One in Marietta has quite a unique back story. The owners of Dough in the Box say they make donuts because they truly love them. During his visit, Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken found that to be very, very true.

Ladies and gentlemen, a quick warning: If you've got a sweet tooth, it's about to hurt.

"We're known because of our blueberry fritters."

"We have our sour cream old fashioned."

"Cherry cake."

"A guava filled with cheese icing."

This is Dough in the Box donuts. A Marietta sweet spot to not only be seen, but tasted and savored, as well. It's where bakers cut a whopping 1,200 to 1,500 each day.

Owner Jesus Balestena said, "Typical day, we start about 10 o'clock at night."

Jesus and his wife, Diana, are pastry pros these days. But, three years ago they were merely customers in the same store.

Jesus said, "I used to come in here every day...every other day...and I fell in love with the place."

And, who can blame him? Now, the couple's apple-filled, old-fashioned, cream-covered delights garner rave reviews – and, return business.

Jesus said, "We treat our customers like family. We know them by name. We know what's going on in their family. We know their orders."

So, what's the secret to their sweet success? Jesus says it's in the back area of the store. Everything is made by hand. And, the couple says their love and care come through with every taste of every donut they serve.

Dough in the Box donuts is located at 3184 Austell Road SW in Marietta. It's open seven days a week, from 5 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Sometimes less can be more! A small space shouldn't limit your garden or your imagination—hanging baskets, containers, window boxes, espaliered fruit trees….they're all great ways to made a big gardening impact – even on the most limited high rise balcony!
