Cost-saving ways to go green and save your green, too

Posted: Updated:

You might think saving the environment has to cost a lot of money. But, Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry found way to go green and save green at the same time.

For example, consider using LED light bulbs.

"The number one thing that amazes me is how cool the light bulbs are," said homeowner Eve Pallansch.

LED bulbs don't give off heat. They cost more initially but, in the long run, will use much less energy than traditional light bulbs. It's just one of the ways Pallansch says she's saving money and the planet.

Gene Cox, of Eco-Denizen, said, "Saving money makes sense to everybody no matter how green you are. Doing things or purchasing products that last longer saves you money in the long run and applies to everybody."

At Eco-Denizen in Midtown, customers can find products geared toward being better for you and the planet, as well. They sell and use LED lighting, but also boast the area's only laundry and cleaning filling station.

Reusing your own container, you can get a fill-up on bio-degradable, hypoallergenic laundry detergent. And, it cost roughly half the price of brand detergent.

Cox said, "We have scented and unscented. It's from a company called sun and Earth."

And, it only costs 14 cents per load of laundry.

Pallansch said, "Shocked, shocked at the savings. It's taken us almost a year to go through a gallon of laundry detergent. We use less than an ounce per load. I mean, the savings is amazing."

Other eco-savings can happen when you re-use everyday items instead of throwing them away. Eco doesn't mean gong out of your way.

"Being co-friendly to us is about making sense, definitely saving money and having products that last longer."

Lastly, another way to go green and save green is to find used products and items that you need on sites like CraigsList.org or by joining groups that exchange items for free like Freecycle.

You've probably heard of a match-making service that helps people find their soul mates. But you may not know that there's a nonprofit in Atlanta that offers a similar service....for people to find....the perfect pet.
