"Dangerous" Lawndale Intersection Gives Neighbors Nightmares

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"This guy had to be doing a hundred."

"I thought the house blew up."

For the neighbors on the 6500 block of Crescentville Road this intersection with Cheltenham Avenue has been a nightmare. So much so, they can't even sit out on their front porches.

"We're afraid to sit out here," neighbor Christine Jones told FOX 29.

"It could have been worse," said resident William Reel Jr. "I have a propane tank out here. If he would have hit that propane tank, it could have blew up the whole area."

The neighbors were reacting to a morning crash Sunday involving a mini van that came careening down Tookany Parkway, jumped the curb onto Jones' front lawn, plowed through a brick wall, crashed through several patios and smashed into this house, before catching fire. Lawn furniture and bricks went flying everywhere. Some ended up embedded in the roof.

"People speed around Cheltenham and Tacony Park," Reel explained. "We need some type of speed bump."

"They need to put something there," Jones added.

Police say the driver, Cordell Williams, was taken away in handcuffs and charged with DUI. It turns out this is at least the fifth crash on this block..

"One went through that house about 10, 15 years ago," Jones recalled.

Cars negotiating the steep curves here have also crashed into the guard rail in Tacony Creek Park across the street. Neighbors say they contacted City Councilwoman Marion Tasco several times looking for help, including this week.

"It's a major problem, the speed bump that we need. We need it seriously and we need it very soon," Reel said.

"Put something there so we can feel safe over here," Jones said.

FOX 29 contacted Councilwoman Tasco's spokesperson. She told us the councilwoman has asked the streets department to do a new traffic survey here and possible add more speed and curve signs along the roadways.

In addition, the councilwoman also asked for another traffic light to be put up down the block here to slow drivers down.

FOX 29 will stay on top of this and let you know if anything gets done about this "dangerous" intersection.
