Survive the drive: The most dangerous intersections in SE Michigan

Posted: Updated:
CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Have you driven on Ford lately? The intersection of Ford and Haggerty is the number one place for crashes in Metro Detroit.

The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments has released a list of the areas with the most crashes.

Follow the link for an interactive map: dangerous intersections.

The Canton Township intersection tops the list. Number two is 11 Mile Road and Southfield followed by 12 Mile and Orchard Lake. 12 Mile and Dequindre in Macomb County is number four.  And Garfield and 19 Mile also saw more crashes than most other intersections in our area.  SEMCOG studied stats from 2008 until 2012. In that five year time, 335 accidents in Canton Township. The number two spot, 11 Mile and Southfield saw 329 accidents in the same time.

Craig Bryson with the Oakland County Road Commission says although they have their own list, the top five crash spots by SEMCOG are on his list too. Bryson says traffic experts are racing to find solutions to help veer these intersections into safer territory.

"We look at the lower cost solutions and see if there's something we can do to make a significant improvement. Things such as changing the striping on the road and making adjustments to traffic signals. Maybe preventing left turns. Simple things like that sometimes can solve the problems," Bryson said.

Two other suggestions also come up. Build a boulevard with two lanes on each side or try a traffic circle instead.

"Statistically round-abouts are about the safest form of intersection we've seen. You're virtually eliminating fatalities, dramatically reducing serious injury accidents. We built our first round-about in 1999, we have the highest concentration of round-abouts in southeast Michigan and have not had any serious injury accidents or fatalities," Bryson said.

Ultimately, drivers are responsible.  Bryson says all five on the list are, not coincidently, some of the busiest.  If you know that watch out.
