WILLCOX, Ariz. -

A family of three was rescued from the Chiricahua Mountains Wednesday after getting lost on a trail.

A father, a mother and an 8-year-old child went for an afternoon horseback ride on Tuesday in the mountains, southeast of Wilcox.

The family reportedly had a map, but but lost the trail.

Authorities say the family stayed put overnight and contacted Cochise County Sheriff's deputies early Wednesday morning.

Arizona DPS Air Rescue found the family high up and in very rugged terrain. They lowered water for the family and the horses.

A CCSO Search and Rescue member was lowered to the mountain to assess the family, and found that the child and mother were severely dehydrated.

The two weren't able to ride or walk out of the rough terrain, so the helicopter lifted them out of the canyon; they were later taken to a hospital.

A second DPS helicopter brought more rescuers to bring more water for the father and the horses. CCSO deputies were eventually able to lead the man and the horses out of the mountains.
