Playground Homeless Woman Concerns Parents

Posted: Updated:

Parents at a Port Richmond playground say they fear for their kids' safety.

They feel intimidated by a street person living, nearly full time, in the park!

We've blurred the woman's face, since she did nothing wrong while FOX 29 was there.

But folks who use Monkievwicz Recreation Center say this woman is here all hours of the day and night, harassing anyone who comes near.

City officials say she's been in and out of shelters for months.

But she always ends up back at Monkiewicz.

The signs clearly prohibit entry to the park from ten at night, through 6am.

But Tatiana Rajic says she often sees the woman here, well after midnight.

"She sleeps there every night," says Rajic, "Yeah. when I come home from work, I see her;she's always sleeping out there."

Len Mace was out practicing golf with his 8 year old daughter Rachel when we visited.

They've seen the homeless woman many times.

"It's disturbing for young children to see something like that," remarked Mace. "It would be nice for her not to be here."

Monkeiewicz is home to a thriving daycamp for young children.

Moms are conflicted about the daily presence of the homeless woman.

"It's a shame because she's human and she deserves better," said a mom. "Maybe somebody should take her to a shelter or something..."

As we said, that's happened, repeatedly, to no avail.

We tried to talk to the woman, to try and understand why she returns here, instead of accepting help at a shelter...

And we called the city's Recreation Commissioner, Susan Slawson.

"She's been asked to leave," replied Slawson. "She's been escorted from the park. She continues to come back."

Within minutes, a homeless outreach van was on the scene.

We agreed not to shoot their interaction with the homeless woman, as they tried to get her help-- away from this children's playground.
