Vandal Hits Vineland

Posted: Updated:
Vineland, NJ -

A vandal shattered both windows and nerves in a Cumberland County, New Jersey neighborhood. He did plenty of damage, but residents are thankful it wasn't any worse.

It's one of those crimes that doesn't make any sense. Police don't have a suspect or much of a description, so the victims may never know what prompted the vandalism.  They do know that the vandal easily could have hurt someone.

At first glance, the damage doesn't look all that bad on Third Street Terrace in Vineland.  A shattered living room window, which is easily replaceable.  But what could have happened is frightening.

Leticia Beteta told Fox 29 she was sitting in her living room Friday night, bent over, tying her shoes, when a paver stone sailed over her head.  You can actually see the scuff marks it left on her table and wall.  Beteta told her husband that if she hadn't bent over the rock would have hit her in the head.

The incident made a big impression on her 11-year-old son, Otilio Perez.  "If she was standing, and if the brick hit her in the head, she'll die quick."

Beteta has four children, the youngest only four years old.  They were asleep at the time in another part of the house. Beteta threw out her sofa, because she didn't want to risk exposing her kids to any lingering shards of glass.

The vandal found the paver in the yard next door, and helped himself to several more. Hiram Alicea lives across the street, and held onto the paver that went through his car window.

"How he managed to carry seven of these here, I don't know." Each one weighs maybe five pounds. Alicea has already replaced his back windshield.

"It makes you kind of upset that somebody could randomly go around breaking people's windows, and not even know 'em," Alicea said.

Police told Fox 29 that the vandal struck seven times altogether, damaging six cars and Beteta's home.  Police say they don't know of a motive for the vandalism. They say there have been no other similar incidents.  It appears to be a one-time event.

Certainly everyone involved is hoping that'll be the case.
