SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -
An 8-year-old boy died after his family's mini-van slammed into a pole Monday night near Loop 101 and Hayden.
Department of Public Safety officials say two adults and two children were inside the mini-van when the driver lost control and crashed into the pole just after 11 p.m.
Authorities say the crash was caused by the passenger grabbed the steering wheel for some reason and tried to take control of the van.
"As it turns out, the mother was at the wheel. The male passenger.. I'm not quite sure how he's related.. but they are injured. They were taken to a nearby hospital, I believe it's Scottsdale Osborn and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Our vehicular crimes unit is investigating the crash and we don't have a whole lot more other than the sad set of circumstances that occurred," said DPS spokesman Bart Graves.
"We'll look at all kinds of factors, whether they were cognizant of what they were doing, what was going on at the time.. we have two survivors that can tell us what happened and that's not always the case with these crashes," Graves added.
Scottsdale police say the boy was sitting in the back seat of the van and wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
DPS officials say the mother and male passenger suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
The roadway was shut down for hours during the investigation. The northbound lanes of Loop 101 reopened around 4:30 a.m.
