La Mirada, CA -

The Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center have joined aquatic facilities around the world to break the world record for The World's Largest Swimming Lesson on Tuesday. The free event aims to promote the importance of teaching children to swim.

World's Largest Swim Lesson spokeswoman, and four time Olympic Gold Medalist, Janet Evans kicked off the event at Splash! Janet is recognized as the best female distance swimmer of all time!

Statistics indicate drowning is the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related deaths for children ages 1-14.  The World's Largest Swim Lesson was created to promote drowning prevention and water safety.

On Tuesday, June 18, all participating organizations around the world, including Splash! will attempt to break the Guinness World Record by hosting swim lessons simultaneously.

To register for The World's Largest Swimming Lesson or for more information, call (562) 902-3191 or visit www.splashlamirada.com.

Splash! is located at 13806 La Mirada Boulevard.

From Hal Eisner:

A drowning can take 2 seconds! That's what scares Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans. She's so scared one of her kids could drown she doesn't have a backyard pool. I was stunned by that. I would have thought an Olympic swimmer would have a pool at their home. But, not Evans. She's so committed to saving kids lives that she participates every year in the World Waterpark Association's annual "World's Largest Swim Lesson" Guinness Book event. This is the 4th year and Evans and other famous swimmers like her are involved at different locations.

Last year some 25,000 participated. This year the goal was 30,000 from 15 countries. Swimmers and instructors at 700 swimming facilities took part. One location was where we were - La Mirada Splash Waterpark. We found plenty of people who thought learning to swim was almost as important as learning to walk. And, there were others who didn't now how to do it. The lesson at each location was basic skills including kicking and arm movements. Evans says if it saves one life it's all worthwhile.

Will the Guinness Book record set last year be exceeded? It won't be known until the end of June. That's how long it'll take to certify the records from each location.
