Before you hit the road, check under the hood

Posted: Updated:

Whether you're hitting the road or just trucking around town, your car needs attention this summer. Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry has some tips for taking care of your car when the weather is hot.

Most people think winter is hard on cars. But, Larry Johnson, owner of Buckhead Auto Care, says summer is the time that your car really clocks some serious time on the road and in the heat.

Johnson said, "When we hit 95 degrees, it's a lot to ask a car to cool you down as well as keep you on the road going safe."

He says the small things you can do in advance will make a big different throughout the season. First, be sure to check your car's wiper blades.

"If you park outside, the sap gets on that windshield and then the sap gets on that wiper blade and they just don't work worth a darn."

It's also a good time to change out your oil filter to make sure your car is running clean. And, speaking of clean, if you notice a funny smell in the car, then it's most likely time to change your cabin filter.

"This will prevent a lot of mold from getting inside the car, as well as a lot of dust and debris," Johnson said.

And, no one wants to be stuck on the road in 90-degree weather without air conditioning. If your's is on the blink, then it's time for a recharge.

"Usually when you have an air-conditioning system that's going in and out like that, it tends to be simply a low charge and it's not allowing it to reach its optimum operating frequency, and the pressure is not as high as it should be."

Johnson says because cars run hotter in the summer, it's essential to check your vehicle's anti-freeze and refill is as needed.  And, though tires are often ignored, this is what can happen if their condition is left unchecked.

Johnson said, "This tire actually should have already been replaced because it's already two millimeters to the wear bars and if they would have replaced this it probably would have saved them a little bit of trouble."

Most of the items on Johnson's summer car care checklist, you can do yourself. He says when you add anti-freeze, there are different types, so it's important to not to mix them. If you have questions about this, it might be best to talk to a mechanic first.
