Birth Certificate Error Prevents Woman's License Renewal

Posted: Updated:

She never noticed her birth certificate indicated she was a he. But that mix up caused a lot of trouble for a woman in Georgia when she tried to get her license renewed.

"You only look at the name, the date and the year. I've never seen that," Explains Nakia Grimes.

Grimes never noticed the "x" in one field on her birth certificate that marked her as male.

She's never really had a need for the document, until she prepared to renew her Georgia driver's license. New rules mean Grimes needed a copy.

"That's when the problems started," says Grimes.

With her birthday deadline approaching, the soon-to-be 37-year-old went to the state's Vital Records Services.

"When I went to retrieve my birth certificate I let her know - the sex status is wrong. I'm a woman, was born a woman," tells Grimes.

Gender, a question this mother says she never imagined she'd have to answer, was now needed to be proved.

Grimes was told that she needed to go have a PAP exam, have a doctor write a note verifying she's a woman, and bring it all back, notarized.

Grimes says she left the office, horrified and angry:

"I don't want to go through with that. Call my doctor and have her examine me. It's definitely not right," reflects Grimes.

After contacting the local FOX news station, reporter Kaitlyn Pratt brought the case to the state's Vital Records.

The director told Pratt that what happened is not protocol.

And promised to make things right.

Then, by looking up the birth certificate of Grimes' son, Zion, state records officials made the change and checked the right box.

A new, correct birth certificate is ready to be delivered.

"Thank you so much. I couldn't have done it by myself," thanks Grimes.
