Woman, Dead For Over A Day, Found In Chester Apartment

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Pa. -

The city of Chester is known for its crime and violence. But one apartment complex provided a kind of oasis, a pocket of the city where families could live safely. So the death of a resident inside her apartment is un-nerving to say the least.

"Never hear anything; the tenants are always very nice, the maintenance people keep up on the property. It's really nice out here. That's why I picked this area to move to," says Priscilla Thompson, a neighbor. "This is really scary. I have young babies. To walk out my house and see this going on, this is a little nerve-wracking."

Police made the discovery at 9:15 a.m. Thursday morning, after the woman's daughter called, asking for a safety check.

According to the Chester Police Commissioner, "When they knocked on the door and were admitted, the stench of death met them at the door."

Officers found the Air Force veteran in her bed, dead for well over a day. Her 28-year-old son was inside the apartment.

"The other person that was at the house, a Patrick Michael Smith, was taken into custody on a Delaware County bench warrant for the original charges of forgery," said the commissioner.

Investigators did not find a weapon, nor was it apparent how she died. Police are waiting for an autopsy to determine the cause. And while they're handling the case as a homicide, they say it's possible it might not be.

"That is why we will not make a move. Basically it's a suspicious death... that we do all suspicious deaths as a matter of homicide," says the commissioner.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
