Photos of Brightmoor dumpers being posted on new website

DETROIT (WJBK) -

It is a new strategy to combat illegal dumping in Detroit. Smile, you're on camera. MeetTheDumpers.com is a website established by the Brightmoor Neighborhood Association. They take pictures of people dumping and post it all online for the world to see.

"Basically neighbors take pictures of people they see dumping, and then we report them to the authorities and publicize them so that people can call, ask them to clean up their mess, ask them to take responsibility," said an individual who wished to remain anonymous.

In fact, a picture of a SERVPRO of Redford truck was snapped. Two guys were dumping debris. The owner was called, and he took action.

"We were notified by the Brightmoor Neighborhood Association, stated that a couple of my employees dumped some trash," said Moses Shepherd. "We had no idea that they did this, but immediately we sent them back over there to pick the trash up, to take the stuff and dump it where it was supposed to be, and those two employees have since been terminated."

"We're here to partner up with the neighborhood organizations and try to help them clean it up and keep it that way."

Shepherd delivered a truckload of water to Brightmoor and Motor City Blight Busters to help in their ongoing clean-up efforts.

"We're confident that it was a mistake and that the individuals that were involved have been released, and the debris has been cleaned up," said John George from Motor City Blight Busters. "He's offered to donate 50 cases of ice water, which is right on time because our summer youth program starts and our kids get thirsty."

However, not everyone supports MeetTheDumpers.com posting pictures online. It can be dangerous work. One dumper came after a photographer.

"I told him I was calling the police. I made the phone call and started trying to take some pictures, and he jumped in his truck and drove right at me," the photographer explained. "I barely got out of the way, and he hit my arm. I ended up with a bruise on my arm for several days."
