Sarah Murnaghan Undergoes Two Transplants In Three Days

University City -

Sarah Murnaghan is pictured smiling with her mother in a hospital bed after getting the last tubes taken out of her chest. Proving to her doctor she's one tough 10-year-old.

"His words were she's a miracle that she's here," said Sarah's mother Janet.

The Newtown Square girl endured two lung transplant surgeries earlier this month  in just three days earlier this month.

There was the celebration at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on June 12 after Sarah's  first surgery giving her a new lease on life.

What we didn't know is later that same night the donated lungs started failing--taking doctors by surprise.

"It was such rapid decline," said Janet. "The fastest decline he'd seen in 23 years of lungs," she said referring to Sarah's doctor.

Sarah's  mom says as is often the case with donated lungs, she  knew the ones Sarah received weren't in the best shape. But she says the family had to do something to save their little aspiring star.

"We were willing to accept marginal lungs in that moment because  we knew
we needed to survive."

With her lungs failing and life on the line, Sarah was put on  breathing machines and given a bleak prognosis.

"We were told in those three days she was going die."

Fortunately a second set of lungs were located  for Sarah. But they too were troubled--infected with pneumonia doctors had to cut out.

"He  re-sectioned it in  a way that removed the pneumonia so he felt like that eliminated it as a real risk," Janet's mom said of the procedure.

The Murnaghan family engaged in a very public battle that  temporarily changed the rules allowing children to be listed on the adult donor list on a case by case basis.

Without it, we might not be looking at Sarah smiling. Proof her mother says that she's doing better everyday and  ready to be a kid again.

"She  says she wants to go to beach first, then to Disney World. She
has plans and  those are the things that keep us going."

Sarah's has a tube in her throat and is not able to talk.

She communicates using charades and an app.

The 10-year-old has another  surgery scheduled Monday to repair her diaphragm paralyzed from all the trauma.

Sarah and her   family hoping she'll be back at home for her birthday on August 7.
