Police-Involved Shooting of Naked Man

Posted: Updated:

Philadelphia Police are releasing new details on a police-involved shooting early this morning in North Philadelphia.

It happened at 5:10 a.m.  at 22nd & Allegheny when a 39th District officer patrolling in the area saw a naked man.

Police say he was acting in a very unstable and violent manner. The officer saw him throwing a large metal newspaper box, throwing and breaking large rocks and even laying in the middle of the street in front of a Septa bus.

Police say the man approached one officer and started slamming his hands on the driver's side door of a police cruiser.  He then punched the windshield of another police car, causing it to shatter with an officer inside.

Police say that officer drew his gun, and while seated in the driver's seat fired through the windshield, striking the man one time in the right chest and one time in the right elbow.

The man was still able to walk down to Westmoreland and Woodstock streets,  where he collapsed.

Medics took him to Temple Hospital, where he's listed in critical but stable condition.

As is standard procedure, the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.
