Ex-fugitive gets life sentences in 2004 killing

Posted: Updated:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 36-year-old Rhode Island man who lived in Arizona under an assumed identity for years has received consecutive life sentences for a 2004 murder that occurred during a botched robbery attempt in Providence.

The state attorney general's office says a judge on Monday sentenced Ramon Virola to life in prison for first-degree murder. Virola got a second life sentence on a charge of using a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

A jury convicted him in March of killing Christopher Nelson as Nelson tried to wrestle the gun away during a robbery attempt at his Federal Hill apartment.

Virola was arrested in 2011 in Arizona, where authorities say he was living under an assumed identity. He had been 1 of Rhode Island's most wanted fugitives.
