Quinn signs school safety measure into law

Posted: Updated:
OAK PARK, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a law requiring Illinois schools to hold safety drills that include practicing what to do during a possible school shooting.

The Chicago Democrat says the law increases school safety in the wake of December's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. He signed the bill Monday at a suburban Chicago school.

Schools already conduct at least six drills a year, including for severe weather. The new law says that law enforcement officials also must include preparation for a potential shooting.

The law takes effect immediately and applies to each school building where classes are held.

The measure was sponsored by state Sen. Jacqueline Collins of Chicago and state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia of Aurora.

The bill is SB1625.
