Braces Basics: What Parents Need to Know

Posted: Updated:

Contrary to popular belief, a child's first trip to the orthodontist should happen between ages 5-7. Dr. Monica Madan and Dr Erin Cohen of Beverly Hills Orthodontics say the Well-child Orthodontic visit can avoid the need for surgery and sometimes even braces, if certain skeletal issues are discovered early. They urge parents to look for signs of an under bite early because once a child hits adolescence, it cannot be corrected without jaw surgery.

The last patient shown in the video story did have jaw surgery in addition to braces.   While the results are remarkable, Dr's Madan and Cohen say when it's possible to avoid surgery, that's ideal.

Orthodontic treatment in Southern California ranges from $3000-$8000.   Dental Insurance often covers a significant portion of that.

Of all the world's religions, Buddhism is one of the most mysterious and most intriguing to many Americans. The books The Dharma Bums, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and even If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him!, are all examples of how Buddhist concepts are part of the American cultural landscape.

As they go around on the merry-go-round, you may start to think you’re seeing double … but you’re not. Chelsey and Airess (2010) are twins and came dressed alike in pink while younger sister Shayna (2012) came dressed for comfort in baby blue.

Many women diagnosed with breast cancer in recent years have chosen to have their other, "healthy" breast removed. Now, new research is suggesting there's very little benefit to having this procedure done. Also, lots of news surrounding this next topic…we're talking about HIV focusing on a drop in people being diagnosed by a third.

We know not getting enough sleep is harmful to your health, but a new study says having interrupted sleep is just as bad? Also, there's no great cure for hot flashes, however a new study says losing weight may help?

A couple of topics to discuss. First up, one so critical to so many of us....Sleep or lack thereof really affects cognitive skills. Also, early this year a big to-do about stem cell research...and now back tracking in a big way.
