Veteran who lost 3 limbs gets specialized wheelchair

Posted: Updated:

Joshua Bullis was on foot patrol in an Afghan village three years ago when an IED went off and forever changed his life. Now the veterans' nonprofit Friends of Freedom wants to make his life a little easier.

"September 2010 I was hit by IED while on foot in southern Afghanistan," he says.

Joshua Bullis lost both legs above the knee and left arm above the elbow. But he didn't let it get him down for long.

"I kind of just said to myself this is how it's going to be. I can't just sit around and mope and cry all day so I just figured let's do this and start from there."

After nearly three years in a standard motorized wheelchair, Bullis is getting a new set of wheels from the Friends of Freedom.

It's called the I-bot -- a high tech wheelchair that will allow him to go up a curb, use four wheel drive and even climb stairs.

But on this day Bullis is not only getting more mobility. He's also getting a visit from two army buddies who were with him in Afghanistan when the bomb that changed his life went off.

Bouncing back, now with a new way to get around.

"There's been many times where I go somewhere and they don't have a wheelchair ramp, or they only have curbs, or the closest ramp is a half mile down the way... just little things like that, that people don't really think of. Really going to be a life changer make life a little easier."

A future made a little easier for a man who gave so much.

Bullis hasn't seen his army buddies in several years. This week he's looking forward to just hanging out with them and having a good time.
