Philadelphia Celebrates July 4th

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

After a long stretch of rainy, dreary weather, the skies cleared today, and just in time.

We're throwing a birthday party, and the whole world's invited.

Let's face it- you can't spell 'freedom' without 'free.'

And with Termini Brothers doing the baking, their cupcake giveaway was the hit of the party.

The Independence Visitors Center was packed with folks from all over the map looking to indulge a sweet tooth, while feeling patriotic.

"It's great. I love decorating cakes and I appreciate the art. It's really beautiful, and smells delicious!" says a visitor.

Just outside, a colonial re-enactor reminded us of that first Fourth of July, with a dramatic reading of the Declaration that set us on the path to becoming the World's Greatest Democracy.

Over at the Betsey Ross House, we watched our nation's population grow by just a bit, as 13 youngsters ranging in age from 8 to 14, and hailing from places like Guatemala, Pakistan and Albania took the oath of citizenship in front of their proud parents.

And what's the Fourth of July, without a parade?

Colorful floats and booming bands reminded us of those who've paid the price for the freedoms we now enjoy.

The crowds took it all in, soaking up the sun and the fun, and every once in awhile, pausing to consider the significance of 237 years of a form of government that few thought would last.

"I like watching her watch the parade...and seeing the holiday through her eyes," said a mom as she sat next to her daughter.

As for the host of this party?

What did out-of-town visitors think of the Cradle of Democracy that we locals spend so much time complaining about?

"It's really nice. It's a lot nicer than I though it would be," says a visitor. "Everyone here is really friendly!"

That should be the new slogan: Philadelphia, it's a lot nicer than you thought it would be!
