Parisian carnival coming to Governors Island

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Visitors to New York City can experience a vintage Parisian carnival this summer.

Fete Paradiso is coming to Governors Island July 13. Every weekend through Sept. 29, the public can ride French artisan-created carousels and carnival rides dating from 1850 to 1950.

It's the first time the attractions are being shown outside France.  French businessman Francis Staub purchased them at a 2011 auction in Paris.

Highlights include a bicycle carousel, one of only two in the world created to encourage a relatively new mode of transportation in the late 1800s -- the bicycle.

Other attractions include the Music-Hall Ball Guzzler, a game featuring life-size caricatures of Charlie Chaplin and other celebrities of a bygone era.

There's also a 1930 children's carousel repurposed as a kiosk for performances and period music.
