Quinn has until July 15 to sign key part of budget

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Gov. Pat Quinn has yet to sign a bill that would put key pieces of the state budget in place.

Lee Newspapers reports that Quinn has until July 15 to sign House Bill 214. If he doesn't, the Illinois comptroller won't have the ability to issue paychecks to tens of thousands of state employees. Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson said Monday that the governor's office is "carefully reviewing the bill."

Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka's spokesman, Brad Hahn, says the office is "in a holding pattern" and waiting to see what Quinn does.

The bill contains a 250-page spending plan for state agencies. It would provide money for agencies in charge of things like state campgrounds and state fairs.
