Revitalizing Michigan Ave, from shopping district to Millennium Park

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Developers want to breathe new life into the section of Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River south to Millennium Park, and better connect the lush shopping district to the tourist hotspot.

There is a plan to revitalize a three-block stretch with four new hotels, two apartment towers and retail space. The proposal calls for these new developments to be housed in various buildings between Randolph and Wacker Drive.

Millennium Park, which opened in 2004, is seen as the catalyst for renewed interest in developing this stretch of Michigan Avenue.

The developers told Crain's Chicago Business that they want to bolster that part of Michigan Avenue to tap into is a millions of tourists that come to this part of the city to see the park. The redevelopment would give visitors more options for places to stay, places to spend and things to do the immediate area.

One of the new hotels is expected to be a Hotel Indigo location, which would take the place of a 12-story vacant building, about one block away from Millennium Park.

"I'm here almost every weekend with the kids," one woman told Good Day Chicago. "It would be great. It's a good idea actually."

The Hard Rock Hotel has made its home on Michigan Avenue for almost ten years. Developers said the well-known hotel has been the anchor for the area, but they feel giving visitors more options would be great for the stretch.
