The real rewards of going 'raw' and 'uncooking'

There are tons of cookbooks out there featuring millions of recipes. But, have you ever tried "uncooking" your food?

From coast to coast, raw foodies are swearing off stoves and microwave ovens. They're rather eat food in its most natural state. They swear it's the secret to feeling better.

But, you might wonder, how does it taste? The FOX Medical Team's Beth Galvin set out to find out!

Going raw requires a commitment: No meat. No dairy. No cooking your food.

But, according to the experts on this lifestyle, the payoff can be pretty sweet.

Inside the door of Sevananda Health Food co-op in Little Five Points, Tassila Ma'at is staging a raw revolution.

"I ask people to make the decision to choose life," she said. "We are what we eat, basically."

Tassili says she's been eating raw for almost six years now, including tons of fresh fruit and vegetables.

No animal products in her diet, as well as no cooking except for dehydrated foods. At 57 she says she feels better, sleeps better and has lost weight.

"Raw food actually does that for you. You can absolutely eat as much as you want and watch your clothes fall off of you," Tassili said.

That was enough to convince Beth to take her first "un-cooking" lesson.

"We are going to make the mello portabello mushroom... steak."

Meaning ‘meaty,' but still ‘veggie.'

To make raw foods tasty, Tassili adds herbs and spices, seasoning salts and olive oil. She says she's big on using her hands to connect to her food, too!

"For those of you who are squeamish, you can take a fork and do it," she said.

Tassili says if you want to experiment with raw, then use your body as your laboratory.

She suggests asking yourself: "How do you feel when you eat certain foods?   What were you thinking when you ate that piece of red velvet cake? Were you stressed out, did you just have an argument with your boss?"

Tassili says you don't have to give up meat – or, even cooking -- completely.

"But if you're choosing things that are life producing, life sustaining, regularly your body is going to start to crave those things," she said.

If you want to try raw food before you commit to the lifestyle, then check out Tassili's Raw Reality in the West End. She says about 65 percent of her customers still eat meat.

If you're ready to jump in with both feet, then Tassili recommends eating about 75 percent raw vegetables and fruit.
