Second Day Of Hearing On Train Derailment

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

A second day of hearings today, about last year's train derailment in Paulsboro, Gloucester County. The National Transportation Safety Board wants to get to the bottom of what caused the accident, as well as how the response was handled.

The train was hauling 23,000 gallons of a toxic chemical, which spilled out over the Mantua Creek back on November 30th.

Today, a representative for the National Fire Protection Association admitted that a small town like Paulsboro may have lacked the resources to handle such a massive response.

"For small departments, especially rural volunteer departments, it's pretty darn hard for them to be expected to have all that particular expertise in house. But it's certainly not in the realm of the possibility for them to have a methodology in place for when it exceeds my capability, call [someone who can help]," says Gregory Cade, Director of Government Affairs at The National Fire Protection Association.

The NTSB says these hearings are just a fact-finding mission and they are not looking to place blame.

There's no word on when the final report on this derailment will be released.
