Rumba Dancing Senior Outwits Teenage Attacker

Posted: Updated:

An Upper Darby senior used a little old-fashioned technology to get out of a potentially dangerous situation.

90-year old "Mike" was headed to a very important appointment in Bromall late Wednesday afternoon.   This life-long dancer was on his way to teach a rumba class and then head over to a social dance, but plans quickly changed when he got into his car.  After lowering his front win dew, Mike spotted a teen who'd been hanging around asking for change.

That teen then proceeded to stick his head into the car window and point a sharp object towards Mike.

Mike told the teen to wait a second and that he would give him money.  Instead, Mike activated the remote house alarm he carries with him, setting off an ear-splitting siren!

"He didn't run or anything.  He just walked away."  Mike told Fox 29's Bruce Gordon.

Ironically, Mike says he rigged that remote alarm himself, several years ago, after being victimized by a pair of armed robbers as he stepped out of his garage.  This time, the attacker headed for nearby Cobbs Creek Park.

Mike called 911 and Upper Darby police quickly arrested 18-year old Keith Alexander.    Police say he was carrying a screwdriver and scuffled with officers.

Mike identified his attacker, but not before complaining to an officer that he'd be late for his rumba class!

Alexander is headed to court next week, on robbery and related charges.

Mike will likely follow the legal proceedings, as long as they don't interfere with his dance lessons.
