It's not too late for your family's summer vacation

Posted: Updated:

If you thought it was too late or expensive to take a family vacation, think again.

"No, not at all. Definitely not. There's always great deals," said Barbara Torjussen, from Travel Leaders.

If you need to catch a flight, Barbara says metro Atlanta has a special advantage because great local access to Delta and AirTran airlines.

She said, "We do have some great packages going to the Caribbean because there's competition; whereas other places, it's just one airline."

We also found some places a family of four can get to that don't involve flying. Rather, they're just a short drive away. Barbara says Chattanooga is a first-rate, last-minute vacation.

"You have the IMAX. You have the incline railroad. You have Ruby Falls. You have the Aquarium. It's jut a two-hour getaway from Atlanta, so it's an easy drive," Barbara said.

And, for a family of four, including tickets to attractions, four nights in a hotel and breakfast, you'll spend less than$1,000.

If you're into adventure, then Barbara says head to Callaway Gardens. Callaway Gardens cabins sell for under $1,000 with admission to the Gardens.

"They have zip-lining. They have the Butterfly Museum. You have biking and hiking."

And, if you truly want a worry-free vacation, Barbara says hit the high seas. Cruises are all-inclusive with plenty of activities for the kids. Royal Caribbean has one leaving from Florida for the whole family for less than $1,600.

"What a fun getaway. You spend a day in Nassau and a day on their Private Island."

A few more tips for getting a good last-minute travel deal:
 - Be flexible: Maybe you can't do five nights; maybe just 4 or you might want to adjust your destination. The more flexible you are, the better the price you're likely to receive.

 - Go during the middle of the week, not the weekend. Weekday rates for hotel, food and activities are usually much lower than weekend rates.
