TUCSON, Ariz. -

A Tucson police officer has been fired after being accused of aggravated assault at a gasoline station while off duty.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department notified Tucson police that 23-year-old Kyle McCartin was arrested early Tuesday.

Rincon District deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at the Giant Gas Station near Sunrise Drive and Kolb Road around 3 a.m.

When officers arrived at the scene in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call, they learned from the clerk that two men entered the store wearing bullet proof vests and appeared to be very intoxicated.

During a transaction, one of the men pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the clerk. The other man told him to put the gun away, but he pointed it at the clerk gain.

Prior to deputies arriving at the gas station, the suspects left the scene.  After a coordinated search, the men were found nearby at an apartment complex.

Authorities say the clerk gave a detailed description of the suspect, who was later identified as McCartin.

Detectives later learned that the suspect never demanded anything while pointing the gun at the clerk, who feared for his life during the incident.

Police say McCartin was hired last September and was on probationary status.

McCartin was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center and charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
