Dire financial times have parents in Inkster worried about their kids' education.

Leaders with Inkster Public Schools have until 5 p.m. Monday to come up with a lot of cash or the district could be dissolved. State leaders feel it is just not viable anymore.

"Some things aren't fixable, and my team said even a manager with the powers that they would have couldn't come in and fix this," said state Treasurer Andy Dillon. "But we're willing to take another look and let Inkster show us that we're wrong."

Dillon said the district is currently working with Comerica Bank to get enough funding to carry them through the upcoming school year.

However, if that does not happen, a new law signed by the governor in July gives the state the authority to basically disband it or any other struggling school district whether parents like it or not.

"I think it's crazy. I think that they shouldn't close the schools down because there's nowhere for the kids to go. There's too many kids out here, and what are they going to do about their education," said Kenita Gee.

The effected students would likely go to bordering districts instead such as Romulus, Taylor, Wayne-Westland or Westwood.

It is a business decision based on a nearly $15 million budget deficit, but for parents there is more at stake.

"I came out, my brothers came out, my whole entire family came out, so I really would like for at least one of my kids to come out of that school," said Craig Ellis. "We're just going to keep the prayers going, and we might get lucky."
