Cuomo, Bloomberg get wet in Adirondack raft race

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

In a push to promote tourism to northern New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and several politicians participated in a white-water rafting race on the Indian River in the Adirondack Mountains Monday afternoon.

Cuomo and two of his daughters helped paddle the Governor's Team raft.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg also participated in the Adirondack Challenge on another raft.

One of the rafts got stuck on a rock when the team members raised their paddles and cheers for the cameras on a river bank.

"The Adirondack Challenge is designed to highlight all of what the Adirondacks region has to offer to New Yorkers and visitors -- and it is also a friendly competition on the beautiful Indian River," Cuomo said ahead of the event. "Today's events illustrate firsthand the natural wonders of the Adirondacks."

Cuomo's team (18:31) beat Bloomberg's by 18 seconds, the governor's office said.

The governor said his administration has been making a big push to encourage tourism to the Adirondacks and other parts of northern New York because the region was hit hard by storm damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011.

Cuomo said that even a fraction of the tourism that New York City gets would stimulate the ailing economy of the state's "North Country."

Public officials and safety advocates worry there will be more drivers high on pot and a big increase in traffic deaths as states liberalize marijuana laws. It's not clear, though, whether those concerns are merited. Researchers are divided on the question. Studies of marijuana's effects show the drug can slow decision-making, decrease peripheral vision and impede multitasking.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
