National Hot Dog Day celebrates one of America's favorite summer sandwiches

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Its summertime.  Hot dogs are center stage on the grill, and at picnics all across America. They are at the ballpark. They are sold from carts on street corners in every city. It's not hard to find them.

During Hot Dog Season, Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.

We consume so many hot dogs, in so many venues, that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council hesitates to forecast consumption. But, it does report that each year we buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets, and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums alone.

Detroit ranks number eight on the list of top hot dog consuming cities with Los Angeles, New York and Baltimore grabbing the top three spots.

However, Michigan does own bragging rights as the birthplace of the coney dog.

The style originated in the early 20th century in Michigan, with competing claims from American and Lafayette Coney Islands in Detroit and Todoroff's Original Coney Island in Jackson.
