DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit's riverfront is an area of the city that has been begging for development.

"We've been working on this and other elements of the East Riverfront District for about six or seven years now," said Will Tamminga with the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation.

Finally, there is a viable plan on the table. The $55 million development would extend five blocks surrounding the popular Dequindre Trail and what will soon be the State of Michigan's Outdoor Adventure and Discovery Center.

The project would include about 300 residential and retail units.

"We're pretty excited about this project because it essentially starts to catalyze and ... focus developers' interest back on the waterfront again," Tamminga said.

"My concern is that there needs to be public input in the creation of a brand new neighborhood in the City of Detroit," said Greg Bowens. "The normal mechanisms to have public involvement into the development have been dismantled. We have an emergency manager in charge. The City Council's role in development in the city has been sort of sidelined."

The political consultant is not the only one who is concerned, but there are plenty of others who say developments like this one will create jobs and a path to a stronger Detroit even in the midst of bankruptcy.

"We don't see bankruptcy as impacting this development opportunity," Tamminga said.

We have been told this is in the very early phases, but that development could begin as soon as Spring 2014.
