Neighbor Reacts To Deadly Drag Race

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, N.J. -

Gloucester County dive teams recover the twisted wreckage of the ‘92 black BMW that police say was drag racing with a '99 Honda Accord early Sunday morning.

"This is the second one this year that ended in the pond," says James Dougherty, a neighbor.

Police say both cars were racing, driving excessively fast down Jackson Avenue. The BMW flipped on standing water and ended up in a small pond.

Dive teams recovered the body of 22-year-old Lateef Scarlett, of Clayton, New Jersey.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 21-year-old John Dingle Junior, was airlifted to Cooper Hospital. He was listed as stable with minor injuries.

"I hear cars go flying by as cars do quite often down our road. They drag race down our road quite often," says Dougherty.

James Dougherty lives on Jackson Road and says he's complained about drag racing to local police at least twice before. There's even a make shift starting line spray-painted on the road. Today he saw the consequences.

"I have a 19-year-old son who has a car like this and I came out and took pictures of these two cars to show him how dangerous it is and what could happen to you," says Dougherty.
