Blackhawks selling `Stanley Cup championship ice` from United Center

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

You have your 2013 Stanley Cup Blackhawks t-shirt, ball cap and perhaps a souvenir poster. So, what more could a fan ask for to commemorate a championship season? How about ice? Not the kind in your drink, but the actual playing ice from the United Center.

The Blackhawks are selling the melted ice to their fans with the proceeds going to Chicago Blackhawks charities.

"This is where it happened.... Right here... On this sheet of ice," a narrator says in a promotional video produced by the Chicago Blackhawks and posted on YouTube.

The video shows workers stripping off the ice at the United Center at the end of the championship 2013 season.

"And when it's gone, it will never be seen again... Or will it?" the video continues. "Captured... bottled... and commemorated. And soon a piece of it can be yours."

Instead of melting and draining the ice this year, the Hawks are betting fans will be willing to pony up for some very special H2O.

"It definitely has value," sports memorabilia dealer Tim Herron says. "Anything that has to do with the Blackhawks right now is of tremendous popularity."

Herron says fans are always willing to pay for a piece of the action. In years past, they've bought chunks of sod from Wrigley Field and Soldier Field, bricks from old Comiskey Park, and now a chance to own the melted ice at the United Center.

"People are looking to get closer to the Blackhawks and to have something to remember it by, the Stanley Cup," Herron explains.

"I wouldn't pay for it," one person told our cameras. "Just don't see the value in it. How you gonna prove where the water came from?"

But the Blackhawks say there will be a certificate of authenticity with each of the 2,013 vials sold. They'll go for $99 dollars apiece and come with glass etching in a beautiful custom box.

That means, if all the ice sells, it'll raise nearly $200,000 for Blackhawks charities--a very worthwhile cause.
