Chicago fast food, retail workers rally for higher pay with 1-day strike

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The battle over wages for area fast food and retail workers heated up Thursday in Chicago. Hundreds of workers walked off the job as part of a seven-city strike on Thursday morning.

Dozens of employees from stores like Macy's and Walgreens, and restaurants including Potbelly and Foodlife participated in the one-day strike in the Loop.

They want a pay raise to at least $15 dollars, from minimum wage of $8.25, and the right to form a union with retaliation.

"I'm not sure how many are walking out. I personally know of at least around a dozen who will," Alex Yekulis said. "That may not be enough to shut down the store, but it will send a message."

The retailers and restaurants said their stores will remain open, because most of their employees want no part of a walkout.
